Minecraft celebrates 15: First version released May 17, 2009

The news is everywhere, the launcher itself updated with an extra front page. 15th anniversary leaks have been appearing for the past month. Now, in celebration of 15 years, events started on the 15th of May!

A reminder that the first version of Minecraft released publicly on May 17, 2009.

  • The first version of Minecraft Java was released for PC on May 17, 2009 and was called Cave Game.
  • After going through alpha and beta versions, the full version was released on November 18, 2011.
  • A version for Android was released on October 7, 2011, and an iOS version on November 17, 2011.

The Xbox One, PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch and Pocket Edition versions were combined into Bedrock Edition on November 18, 2016 on Minecraft full version’s 5th anniversary, allowing them to play together.
