Portfolio render Pixelmon circular city

How I built: Lumiose City map (Now in store!)

Pixelmon?! Pokemon?! Maybe. Sadly I lost most WIP pictures but I can shed light on the process in words:

THE SETUP

I imported one of the maps of Lumiose that exist online as a reference, scaled to an arbitrary 770×770.

THE LAYOUT

All buildings were traced using //line and //hcyl, then filled with //fill. Notice I used very specific colors for everything: this was the magic of masking to allow me to complete the entire city in the next steps. The city got divided into 5 main quarters and each one had a different outline and fill wool to separate it.

THE MAGIC

Now you have to imagine the fun (though finicky and time consuming) part – here’s roughly what I did:

(This will probably mean nothing to you unless you know your way around World Edit masks & patterns)

  • Manually add doors where I want them to every building (They will stick out it doesn’t matter)
  • Select the layer with the prepared flat city layout
  • //Replace the “outline wool” into a #linear2d pattern that adds glass in roughly correct intervals
  • //Stack everything up 19 blocks (Yes the doors will break and look cursed)
  • //Replace the outline wool+glass to a floor-divider block and the filler wool to floor
  • Shift the selection 1 up and replace glass to wools, and doors to door[half=upper]
  • Shift the selection 3 up and replace glass to wools, and doors to door[half=upper]
  • Shift the selection 1 up and repeat last 3 steps 3 times, replacing doors with glass on upper floors
  • Use modified #linear2d pattern to place end_rods with trapdoors below (<) floors to add lighting
  • Go around and remove parts of buildings to add height variation
  • Select rooflines and replace around #existing blocks to add overhanging ledge
  • More masking to add tapering roof layers, masking blocks around air to add and delete outlines
  • Some other masking for the separately colored canals, gardens, fountains and building bridges..

With the city base in place I could go about texturing and detailing everything..

And we get Lumiose: Easier written in hindsight than done in reality but… Enjoy!
