Are we finally getting Minecraft 2 before GTA VI?
You may have seen the news, or simply followed Notch’s Twitter (Formerly X..). After years of silence, the creator of Minecraft made a sudden mention of the possibility of a “spiritual successor to Minecraft”:
“Honest and legitimate request for feedback for once: The new game I’m passionately working on is currently set to be a traditional roguelike (i.e. ADOM, nethack, etc) mixed with a tile based first person dungeon crawler (ie Legend of Grimrock (esp 2), Eye of the Beholder)
But then I gots to thinking that maybe there are people who like my work but might not share my taste in retro nostalgia and would prefer for me to make a spiritual successor thing to Minecraft, and I mean sure, I’d take that cash. So market research. I’d be happy to oblige either, which one would make you happier?”
After 1.5M views and 290K votes, with useless hours left to vote, Minecraft 2 is a hard winner.
Notch called the other game that lost “Kinda feels like stardew valley, but more diagonal door kicking.” and mentioned potions.
The official Planet Minecraft account noted, “Curious to see if this new project will embrace community creativity like Minecraft has.” regardless of how serious Notch is about the ordeal.
Notch later assured us that in a slightly sarcastic way that he is “100% serious about all that, btw.”
