Portfolio render bladerunner tyrell headquarters

WEEKLY NEWSLETTER (Nov 10) – “Bladerunner & Beyond” special

“Do you dream about being interlinked?” – Interlinked. (Yes, the cover is a Minecraft build)

BUILDING THE WORLD OF BLADERUNNER

TYRELL CORPORATION (In-universe references incoming):

127 floors within 383 blocks, as opposed to the actual 700 (in Blade Runner 2049). Cells.

The 8 diagonal border towers are linked to the central pyramid at the bottom. Interlinked.

The design is recognizable. Distinct. The pyramid casts a shadow over Los Angeles. Dark.

ANYWAY: Welcome to my latest insane project. A “Mega” build, if you will.

Build progress

I had wanted to start another cyberpunk project for a long time – my past projects don’t satisfy me in scale or detail. Watching Blade Runner 2049 was the tipping point that broke me: The next day, Tyrell Corporation Headquarters had been built and rendered. It was a week-end well spent. The structure itself is fairly simple, though not quite complete yet. I built 1/8th and copied this since it is a pyramid.

The footprint of the structure is 1.3k blocks across and it takes up the entire build limit. It is the largest building in Blade Runner’s Los Angeles after all, the Earth HQ of the new Wallace Corporation. This caused an interest dilemma: The build is too big to load in in-game (A render distance of 32 chunks loads a third of the structure at most). And that part of the map has essentially become a self-contained lag machine!

I showed the structure to some people: one of them experienced graphical glitches across their Minecraft screen, the same ones I faced when building the Line on my old PC. Another outright crashed exploring it!

My original plan was to work on fully furnishing the pyramid (albeit with plenty of copy paste), but that may cause unplayable lag. Notably, lag started apearing since I added the inner floors. The current plan is to carve out huge gaps in the many floors to create open atriums and halls, and only build key locations like the memory lab, archives or the CEO office. I have a moodboard with a breakdown of locations:

Other key locations include K’s apartment and rooftop; Markets and bazaars where Doc Badger worked; The farms exemplified by the hideout of replicant Sapper Mortons at the intro; The LAPD headquarters. Infrastructure including the sea wall, space LAX or massive solar farms.

I plan a snow theme for Los Angeles to coincide with the end of the year. Can’t say the same for the radioactive scorching deserts of Las Vegas, if we ever get there. “Thankfully”, the world of Blade Runner has close to no nature remaining anywhere on-screen, hence it is a heaven for structure builders…

Anything else?

Bladerunner and Youtube have been keeping me busy, so not much else this week! Thanks for reading.
