PSA: Last week to migrate Java Mojang accounts
I thought this general news was worth mentioning as it concerns potential game account deletion.
“Starting September 19, 2023, at 11:00 am EST/17:00 pm CEST, unmigrated Mojang accounts will not be able to sign in to Minecraft.net or the Minecraft Launcher to migrate.”
There is one week left to migrate your Mojang account to a Microsoft account, as Minecraft merges into its parent company’s ecosystem. This means that going forward, all users will need to use their Microsoft account of choice to login to the Minecraft website and launcher. Reddit users share their concerns:
One user comments, “I have friends who haven’t played the game in a few years, if they were ever to return, is their purchase just invalid now?”. Another makes a valid counter claim, stating that there have indeed been ample time (3 years) to be reminded of the migration and complete the process, and that by purchasing the game you are bound by the EULA & ToS and have no guarantees. Nevertheless, the forced migration is an extreme last step and accounts on hiatus or with rare usernames might be lost.
Extra context: Microsoft bought the game from Notch in 2014 for 2.5 Billion USD. Bedrock Edition users have been using Microsoft accounts since the full edition of Bedrock was released based off the MCPE edition. The former Mojang.Com website has been sunset entirely and redirected to Minecraft.Net.
How to Migrate your Mojang account
The migration cannot be avoided. If you still haven’t migrated, log back into your account and there should be a prompt in the launcher. Or login to Minecraft.Net and follow the steps listed in the official migration help article.
There is also a Microsoft account migration FAQ for that assures users of the enhanced safety, as well as a troubleshooting guide.
